(Miami, FL - October 10, 2012) More than
400 people attended The Beacon Council's Annual Meeting on Wednesday where
Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Univision Networks President Cesar Conde
announced a new Univision/ABC television network in Miami-Dade County that
will add $274.52 million in capital investment and nearly 700 jobs within
three years.
"Univision's
decision to grow here is a testament to Florida's status as one of the most
business-friendly states in the country," said Governor Scott.
"Today's announcement is more proof that Florida is well-positioned to
lead the country's economic growth in the next generation, as we compete
and succeed in a global marketplace."
The new English-language television news
network targeting the growing Hispanic market will be headquartered at the
Univision studios in Doral and is scheduled to open in 2013. It is one of
the largest projects in Miami-Dade County.
"The new ABC-Univision network will
be headquartered in a state-of-the art facility and will retain and attract
the very best talent in the industry, creating a thriving and dynamic
production hub that will undoubtedly benefit Miami-Dade County and the
State of Florida," said Cesar Conde, president, Univision Networks.
"We're very happy that through this historic venture we will be able
to continue contributing to the job growth and progress of Florida."
The network will add 346 direct new jobs
in the next three years. The Beacon Council estimates this adds another 208
indirect jobs (which occurs when there is an increase in suppliers and
services as a result) and retains 137 jobs (which would have gone to
another location).
"This is a huge win for our entire
community and it illustrates the growth potential of the creative
industries, one of the seven target industries of the One Community One
Goal Strategic Plan," said Frank R. Nero, President & CEO of The
Beacon Council. "The impact of the high-paying direct and indirect
jobs will be felt throughout our community as the new network will attract
a multitude of suppliers, vendors and talent to Miami-Dade."
The capital investment will be used for
facility construction and renovations including noise reduction technology
and capital equipment, including digital production equipment. The Beacon
Council estimates it will generate about $3 million in property taxes each
year. The county is providing the company with a financial incentive of
$3.5 million to be paid throughout seven years, a dent in the taxes
generated during the same time, estimated to be $18 million. The City of
Doral is expected to receive $355,857 in taxes per year as well. The state
is providing the company with a financial incentive of up to $7 million.
"This is fantastic news for
Miami-Dade County particularly for our residents who stand to benefit from
the hundreds of high-paying jobs that this new investment will
generate," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.
"Univision/ABC clearly recognizes that our community possesses the
winning combination of a business-friendly environment and the dynamic
human capital that can power their exciting new venture forward."
